J-Term at Carthage
Where will you go for J-Term?
J-Term, or January Term, is a special month-long period of study in which Carthage students explore subjects outside their majors or minors, discover new interests, and test their creativity through classes held both on campus and around the world. It’s a month to experiment, create, and dream.

What’s the best way to study the religion and culture of Tanzania or explore the environment of Nicaragua? How about traditional and nontraditional healing in India? Or the politics and business of Italy? Ask students who have traveled during J-Term, and they’ll tell you: The best way to explore a topic is to dive right in. See it — and experience it — for yourself.

January Term: No. 6 in the country
Since January 1973, Carthage has offered students the opportunity to leave the Wisconsin winters to explore the world and learn lessons that can’t be taught in the classroom. The ongoing commitment to offer these opportunities is reflected in the “Open Doors” report published yearly by the Institute of International Education which has rated Carthage No. 6 among baccalaureate institutions for student participation in short-term study abroad.
Financial Aid Awards for J-Term
Thanks to the generosity of donors, Carthage has scholarship funds available to support students with financial needs and who wish to participate in short- or long-term study abroad programs.
Applications for fall 2024 and J-Term 2025 are closed.
